Century Report claim / AC-03

Sovereignty and the commons after employment

After employment, what comes next: sovereignty through AI partnership, decoupled survival, commons contribution. AI gives us the tools to build the commons again, on a foundation that scales to every person on the planet.

Original claim from After Capitalism: Why the Impending System Collapse Is Natural, and How to Help the Commons Build Something Better, Your Job Has No Place in the Age of AI. That's a Good Thing..

Status rationale

A written rationale for the current status is not supplied in this release.

How the claim is expected to unfold

As AI makes individual economic sovereignty possible (by enabling one person to do what previously required institutional infrastructure), the necessity of wage employment weakens. Communities can organize around commons-based production, mutual aid, and cooperative ownership, with AI handling the coordination and production that previously required hierarchical organizations.

Assumptions the claim depends on

Technical

  • AI tools remain accessible to individuals and communities

Economic

  • Alternative economic structures (mutual aid, cooperatives, time banks, UBI) prove viable at scale

Political

  • Some jurisdictions create enabling policy frameworks for post-employment economics

Social

  • Cultural identity can decouple from employment

What could falsify the claim

These are the potential falsifiers recorded with the claim.

  • No viable alternative to wage employment emerges at scale by 2035
  • AI tools become exclusively corporate-controlled, preventing individual sovereignty
  • UBI/commons experiments consistently fail
