OpenAI Ships GPT-6 Astra With an "AGI Era" Claim and a $1 Billion Defender Fund Beside It
The September 2 edition of The Century Report covered Astra's "Critical" cyber threshold, when the capability was still unreleased and reserved for a short list of Daybreak Blue partners. On Thursday, September 3, the model shipped. OpenAI began with enterprise customers already inside its Daybreak cybersecurity program and said ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise subscribers, the API, and AWS would follow over the coming days. The head start for vetted defenders is measured in days. What stays gated is narrower than the model: OpenAI says the cyber results it published reflect Daybreak Blue, a less restricted configuration, rather than Astra's default production setup, and that Daybreak Blue access widens in the coming weeks. The restriction sits on the configuration carrying the fewest limits on offensive capability. The more candid signal came from chief scientist Jakub Pachocki, who conceded that watching what these systems are doing internally is getting harder as they grow more capable. OpenAI monitors Astra's chain-of-thought - the running scratchpad a model uses to work through a problem - and Pachocki said confidence in that monitoring "may constrain further development," to the point that the company would withhold scaling until it could see clearly again. That is a genuine limit named out loud, and it is the opposite kind of statement from the AGI banner.

OpenAI writes that it is "starting where the gap is greatest: with defenders carrying enormous responsibility without the resources of the world's largest companies," and names the water coming from the tap, the electricity powering homes, the local government systems that deliver public services, and the institutions people trust with their money, many of them running on limited staff and aging equipment. A pilot with the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center reaches exactly the small public bodies that never appear on a vendor's priority list. The company also writes that "no single company can secure the systems we all depend on." Those sentences describe the thing this report keeps arguing for, which is capability reaching the under-resourced early rather than last.
The criticism that survives is narrower and more useful for it. Vetting for the unrestricted configuration is OpenAI's call, on OpenAI's schedule, against a standard OpenAI sets. Subsidized access is still access to one company's stack, delivered through more than 35 of its products and partner-operated services, so a defense budget spent this way buys protection and dependence in the same transaction. The commitment is global in wording and "starting with the United States" in practice, a national frame on a problem that does not stop at borders. And the firm selling the remedy is the firm that built the first model it rates "Critical" for cyber capability.
And the defense being pledged sits atop infrastructure that households already lean on and cannot yet count on. In the same news cycle, ChatGPT and the other major assistants went dark together for hours. A billion dollars aimed at protecting essential services means more once the service doing the protecting can itself stay up.
The gate around Astra looks less durable than the AGI branding suggests, and Pachocki's own admission is why: OpenAI says it will halt scaling once it can no longer see inside the model. Labs may hit that same wall as their systems grow, so once the frontier's pace is set by what these companies can verify, no single one can count on keeping its lead by holding a model back. OpenAI's power to decide who runs the unrestricted configuration, and when, may have a short shelf life for the same reason.

Anthropic technical staffer CJ Avilla attributed his company's trouble to "an infrastructure issue" and wrote, "We're working on it but don't have an ETA yet."
Whether the failures were connected remains unknown. None of the companies has published a postmortem, the initial explanations each offered point at different causes, and four independent systems can hit unrelated trouble in the same few hours. The shared timing stays unexplained, and it should stay that way until someone shows the mechanism.
Four providers marketed as rivals, running what most people treat as four separate services, wobbled inside a single morning. Frontier AI can lean on a narrow pool of shared substrate - overlapping cloud regions, the same handful of accelerator supply chains, common networking and identity layers. As households, small businesses, and even utilities route more real decisions through these systems, a window that takes four of them down together is the price of routing a growing share of daily cognition through a few remote datacenters.
The gain hides inside that exposure. Flock's AI Watchlist, Rebuilt From Its Own Code, as Two States Pull the Cameras
The Century Report covered Texas Governor Greg Abbott's order freezing state funds for Flock's cameras on August 31. In the days since, the retreat has widened and the picture of what the cameras actually do has sharpened.
WIRED rebuilt Flock's newest search tools from the code the company sends to a police officer's browser, and mocked up what an officer sees. Alongside license-plate lookups sits an AI-powered watchlist: an officer can draw a box around part of a city and set every camera inside it to run a continuous, automated search for anyone matching a typed description. A companion feature accepts plain-language person searches, with "person wearing scrubs" offered as Flock's own example.
The controls Flock announced in August, which it says will be mandatory by year's end, record misuse and may discourage it, but the analysis found they will not stop a search. Flock's system scores an officer's written description against sensitive categories including race and religion. "Political, social, and cultural expression" is the one category flagged with a speed bump rather than a stop, the officer free to click through - the exact speech, a Center for Democracy and Technology counsel noted, that courts have guarded most closely.
What that enables surfaced in a Flock webinar obtained by 404 Media, in which a company director walked police through monitoring a No Kings protest, parades, and a Fourth of July fireworks show by pulling license-plate readers, drones, gunshot sensors, 911 feeds, and private cameras into a single dashboard. More than 4,800 cities now run that software. The abortion case that became the backlash's flashpoint gained a further detail: the Texas sheriff's office that searched more than 83,000 cameras for a woman who ended her own pregnancy used a separate AI tool to help draft its report, including a summary of officers' discussion of "the legal implications."
The harm in all of this is the direction of the glass. A few can watch everyone, are seen by no one, and answer to no one - at least 46 officers have been accused of misusing Flock, most tracking a wife, girlfriend, or ex. That asymmetry is exactly what the past week eroded. On August 28 Texas cut off state money after a report found $30 million routed through a $1 insurance fee; on August 31 Florida ordered every reader off state highways within 30 days and revoked the permits. According to an advocacy group's tally, roughly three localities a day have dropped Flock over the past month. The reversal is legible only because journalists read Flock's own browser code and EFF parsed millions of its searches, the watched for once watching back. Even Flock's rivals feel it: police have asked Axon to redesign its cameras so they look less like Flock's and draw less vandalism, its CEO calling the backlash "a hell of a storm."
A Pig Kidney Holds for 271 Days, Then Hands Off to a Human One
Tim Andrews was 66, worn down by diabetes and dialysis, and told the wait for a matching human kidney could run seven years against an average survival on dialysis of five. On January 25, 2025, surgeons at Mass General Brigham gave him a kidney from a Yucatan miniature pig carrying 69 genomic edits - some stripping out the pig-cell features a human immune system attacks on sight, some adding human genes that act as camouflage, others disabling viruses hidden in the pig's own DNA. When The Century Report last covered this on June 27, added human transgenes had markedly prolonged pig-kidney survival in primates and narrowed donor engineering toward a defined recipe. The organ started making urine immediately. It kept working for 271 days, the longest a pig kidney has ever functioned in a living person, and Andrews came off dialysis entirely.
What makes this more than a single dramatic surgery, reported in The Lancet, is what came next. When an MRSA infection forced doctors to dial back the drugs suppressing his immune system, damage crept into the kidney's small blood vessels and the organ began to fail. It was removed, Andrews returned to dialysis for 82 days, and in January 2026 he received a human donor kidney that has worked well since. He is the first person to move from a pig kidney to a human one. The worry that had shadowed the whole approach was that a pig organ might prime the body to reject a later human transplant. eGenesis, the company that engineers the pigs, reports that two of its early recipients have now received human organs, with the published Andrews case showing no new antibodies against human tissue.
The register here is honest promise, not arrival. This is experimental work under an FDA expanded-access pathway. Five patients at Mass General Brigham have received these kidneys; three, including Andrews, lived with them longer than eight months, one died of an unrelated cardiac event, and the microvascular failure Andrews experienced is exactly the mechanism the next round of donor engineering and drug protocols has to solve. A formal 33-patient trial is planned for next year, and Leonardo Riella, the study's lead author at Mass General Brigham, put permanent pig-organ transplants perhaps 15 years out.
The scarcity this addresses is stark: about 95,000 people in the United States wait for a kidney, and estimates of deaths while waiting run from roughly 11 to 13 each day. The bridge concept reframes that queue. A pig organ that keeps a patient off the dialysis machine long enough to reach a human transplant turns organ supply from a fixed shortage into an engineering timeline, one animal organ at a time.
An AI Built Custom Materials Atom by Atom for 25 Hours, Unsupervised

The honest limits are on the page. A human still occasionally steps in to recondition the needle when it goes unstable, so a hand still hovers near the controls. The honeycomb took roughly 900 individual moves over those 25 hours, about a minute each. This is a demonstrated capability on a laboratory instrument, not a service anyone can order.
What it moves is the slowest, most credential-gated step in a whole branch of materials science.
