Its operating fleet stood near 61 gigawatts at the end of 2024, below the prior 70-gigawatt goal, while national targets call for 110 gigawatts by 2030 and 200 by 2035.
Approval begins a long construction, commissioning, and safety-review path, and targets alone cannot supply electricity. The catalyst joins molybdenum, copper, and carbon through an atomic interface that weakened the nitrate molecule’s nitrogen-oxygen bond by 36.85% and lowered the activation barrier by 0.43 electron volts. Carbon wires within the interface buffered electrons and redistributed charge as the reaction proceeded. That combination helped the cell maintain selectivity under the high-current conditions where many laboratory catalysts lose it. The result offers a route for treating nitrate contamination while recovering nitrogen as ammonia, a fertilizer input normally produced through energy-intensive Haber-Bosch plants.
The second team redesigned the entire cell around formamide production. Ordinary electrosynthesis often creates the desired carbon-nitrogen bond at one electrode while the counter-electrode splits water or generates low-value byproducts. This system produced formamide at both electrodes and sent each side’s byproducts across the cell as feedstock for the other reaction. Copper nanosheet microchannels maintained a strongly alkaline zone within 100 nanometers of the cathode while the bulk liquid remained neutral, allowing reduction and oxidation chemistries to coexist with roughly 100% carbon and nitrogen selectivity.

Across multiple cultured cancer-cell lines, the redesigned proteases triggered strong cell death.
The team used phage-assisted continuous evolution, a rapid laboratory process that repeatedly mutates proteins and selects versions that perform a chosen molecular action. Its dual-selection system rewarded cleavage of procaspase-1 while penalizing cleavage of VAMP1, one of the toxin’s natural targets. The resulting X(PC) protease lost activity against all four known native botulinum-X substrates. It cleaved procaspase-1 with an efficiency only about fivefold below the original toxin’s performance on its natural target, showing that evolution had redirected the protease with considerable precision.
Delivery was the next barrier. Researchers reattached the evolved proteases to the toxin’s native translocation domain, giving them a route into mammalian cells. In culture, the resulting molecules selectively killed cancer cells while sparing non-cancerous cells. Expression of the procaspase-1-targeting variant also slowed tumor growth in a drug-resistant mouse model of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, one of the cancers most resistant to existing treatment.
The result remains preclinical. Human safety, immune reactions, dosing, delivery across varied tumors, and control of the inflammation produced by lytic cell death all require extensive study. Still, the demonstrated capability changes the starting material available to cancer researchers. A toxin evolved to disable cellular machinery has become a configurable carrier and effector for activating death pathways that tumors suppress. Biology’s inherited weapons are increasingly becoming editable molecular programs, with directed evolution expanding the set of interventions medicine can test against diseases that once offered few entry points.
A Trace Polymer Lets Cement Heal Again
A Nature Communications paper published Saturday describes cement that repeatedly closes its own cracks using less than 0.15% polymer by weight. The additive forms reversible electrostatic and hydrogen bonds with itself and with cement hydration products, creating what the researchers call molecular Velcro. Embedded vascular channels add manufacturing demands, while high additive concentrations can alter setting, workability, and mechanical performance. The trace-polymer composite required no capsules or channels and had minimal effects on ordinary cement processing. Under a severe testing protocol that pushed samples beyond peak load until they lost 20% of their strength, the material recovered up to 62% of compressive strength and 59% of tensile strength. Recovery continued through multiple damage-and-healing cycles.
The experiment establishes a material mechanism under controlled conditions. Field deployment will require larger-scale trials across temperature swings, repeated wetting and drying, salts, freeze-thaw cycles, and the irregular cracks that form in buildings, roads, dams, and wells. Even partial life extension would carry substantial consequences because concrete repair consumes fresh cement, labor, transport, and closures throughout an asset’s lifetime.
A minute additive changing how cement responds to damage points toward infrastructure that participates in its own maintenance. The immediate gain is longer service life from material already poured. Beyond that sits a wider change in engineering economics: durability becomes something embedded at the molecular level, reducing the recurring extraction and reconstruction once treated as the unavoidable price of a crack.

For years, frontier labs have lent intelligence through connections they control. They keep the model on their servers, set the terms, choose the evaluators, and decide when everyone else is ready.
